Look beyond processor and memory
Storage performance, data growth, operating-system compatibility and connections to other systems can determine whether an application works well. The software supplier may also have hosting conditions or licensing requirements that need checking.
We discuss expected use and those dependencies before selecting the environment. A specification that looks right on paper still needs to account for the way the application behaves and the people supporting it.
Plan the routes into and out of the environment
Users, administrators and connected services need appropriate access. That brings identity, network restrictions and remote working into the hosting discussion, together with any continued dependence on office infrastructure.
Data location and movement matter too. Consider how information arrives, where it is needed and how it could be recovered or exported later. A hosting decision should not leave the business uncertain about how to retrieve its information when requirements change.

Decide who will do the work after deployment
The proposal should identify the resources supplied and the management work included or separately required. Operating-system updates, application support, monitoring and data protection all need an owner.
Availability features and backup address different problems. Reducing the effect of an infrastructure failure does not, by itself, explain how deleted information or an incorrectly changed application will be recovered. Match the agreed protection and restoration work to the application’s needs.
Understand what can change the running cost
Capacity, licensing and data transfer may affect charges. Discuss expected demand and how changes will be reviewed and approved, rather than judge the service only by its starting specification.

Can our existing application move without changes?
Sometimes, but compatibility, licensing and connected systems need checking. A supported hosting configuration or a different access method may be required. Involve the application owner or supplier before assuming that copying the current server will produce the same working service in a new location.
Is ongoing management automatically included?
The proposal states which management work comes with the hosting. Do not assume it includes every update, user request or application fault. Where you want hosting with continuing operational care, discuss managed hosting from the outset so the responsibilities are considered together.
Does resilient hosting replace backup?
No. Resilience can address some infrastructure failures, while backup and recovery address different needs such as lost or incorrectly changed data. The service should explain the protection included, what can be restored and who performs and checks the recovery work.
What information helps you size the environment?
The application requirements, current resource use, expected growth and important connections are useful starting points. Include support and licensing conditions from the software supplier. We also need to understand how staff use it and the business effect of an interruption, not only its server specification.
